Born in the densely overpopulated city of Houston, TX, my origins are somewhat of a mystery. My mother, who was adopted as a baby, was raised by a Southern Baptist preacher and his wife. My dad, who himself was a Baptist preacher before I was born, showed himself to be a detached and almost invisible member of my nuclear family until the time around my 12th birthday, at which time my mother asked for a divorce. My father had a child from a previous marriage, a son who lived with his mother at that time. At the date of this writing, I haven't spoken to my half-brother in 14 years. Other than that, I haven't spoken to my father at length and don't plan on doing so. Thus, I know little or nothing about my father's upbringing, nor do I care.
When I was four, the murder of our next-door-neighbor prompted my family to pick up and move. In 1993, we relocated to the pothole town of Hillsboro, TX, a city whose population has recently reached 9,000. I'm related to a good half of the residents in Hill County, through marriage only by virtue of my mother being adopted (thank God). It was already known that I had some type of a genetic disorder that was affecting my muscles, but the severe symptoms didn't show up until later. Shortly after turning 8, my intermittent use of a wheelchair became permanent, and from that point, I was unable to walk on my own.
I showed to have a high scholastic aptitude at an early age, though my talents were unable to flourish in the school setting I was in. I went through private education until 10th grade, at which time, it became apparent that I wasn't receiving the necessary education to succeed in a college environment. My step-father decided that it was time for me to attend the local public high school, where I graduated at the age of 16, ranked 6th in my class. I then attended the local community college, where I busted my ass and finished two Associate's degrees in two years, graduating Summa Cum Laude. I transferred to the University of North Texas, where I am currently pursuing two degrees: a BS in Computer Science with a minor in Technical Writing and a BA in Radio, Television, and Film.
My dream job has gone from being a meteorologist to being a high school teacher to teaching at a university, and now, I have no idea what I want to do with my life. I would be happy working as a producer in a news room, but I still have some time to figure out how I'm going to apply my double degree. I worked in my family's appliance store from the age of 6 until I moved to UNT in the Fall of 2007. I learned a lot about bookkeeping and business practices, including customer service. Once I started at the community college, I took on a clerical job in the counseling center and a learning center lab assistant position. I also became certified and tutored various subjects for the two year duration at Hill College. I've also been tutoring math for the past year at UNT, and I plan on continuing with the Learning Center as well as my additional duties as Residence Hall Association Secretary. Oh yeah, and I also applied to be a Writing Tutor and a Math Grader for the next year; let's see if those two pan out, as well. (Did I mention that I'm also a ChaCha Guide?)
(more to come later)
